Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson remain on a collision course for a potential lightweight showdown.
Davis is the reigning WBA champion at 135lbs, having won the ‘regular’ title several years ago, before being elevated to ‘super’ champion after Devin Haney vacated the title to move up to 140lbs.
The 30-year-old from Baltimore makes the next defence of his crown on March 1 against Lamont Roach in New York, as he looks to make it 31 consecutive professional wins.
Stevenson has held the WBC lightweight title since November 2023 when he outpointed Edwin De Los Santos in Las Vegas. The 27-year-old from New Jersey made the first defence of his crown last July with a comprehensive decision win over Artem Harutyunyan.
Stevenson was due to defend his title for the second time against Joe Cordina in October, but was forced to pull out of the bout after he sustained a hand injury in training camp, but now returns in February to face unbeaten talent Floyd Schofield.
Speaking on the Cigar Talk Show, Davis was asked if a showdown with Stevenson would be his toughest test, to which he said this.
“Hell no. Show me something he did outrageous. His power is not outrageous, what defence? You never see him slip no punch. You see him back up and move around.”
The 30-year-old then backed up his claims by summing up the ability of his lightweight rival.
“He doesn’t have any technique.”
Davis recently announced that he could make a shock exit from boxing at the end of 2025, claiming he is ‘tired of the sport’ & aims to spend more time with his family. He intends to fight at least three times this year before walking away from the sport for good.
