Errol Spence Jr is set to make his long-awaited return to boxing against WBC and WBO light middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in March.
The 34-year-old from Long Island, New York has not fought since coming up short against Terence Crawford in their showdown for the undisputed welterweight championship in July 2023.
Fundora bounced back from his maiden career defeat against Brian Mendoza to defeat Australia’s Tim Tszyu last March to capture the WBC and WBO titles at 154lbs.
Dan Rafael revealed on his X account that March 29th is the target date for Spence vs Fundora at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“Per source involved, the target date for #FundoraSpence 154 title bout is March 29 to headline a PBC on Prime PPV at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Deal not 100% done yet but if it gets done that is the plan as of now, the source said.”
Fundora’s WBC title will likely be the only belt on the line after WBO president Gustavo Oliveiri suggested they will not allow their strap to be contested as Spence is not ranked within the top 10.
‘The Truth’ has been targeting a return to the ring for a number of months, as he looks to get his career back on track after that defeat to Crawford, who has gone on to win the WBA title at light middleweight after dethroning Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles last summer.
Fundora was rumoured to be in talks with the representatives of ‘Bud’ at the back end of 2024. but it is likely that the 37-year-old will instead face unified super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Turki Alalshikh is said to be leading negotiations for the mega fight between Crawford and Canelo, which could take place in May.
