George Foreman remains one of the greatest heavyweights to grace the sport of boxing.
Foreman entered the ring 81 times in a career that began in 1967, losing just five times during that period. He boasts wins against the likes of Michael Moorer, Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, cementing himself as a prominent figure in a generation of legendary heavyweights.
‘Big George’ is often remembered for that iconic battle with Muhammad Ali that took place back in 1974. ‘The Rumble In The Jungle’ is written into boxing folklore as one of the most memorable moments in the sports history.
It was ‘The Greatest’ who got the better of his opponent on that historic night, handing Foreman his first career loss with an eighth round knockout.
Speaking on social media, Foreman talked about the prospect of a rematch between him and Ali taking place following their first battle, claiming just one meeting with his heavyweight rival was enough for him.
“Once in the ring with the great Ali was enough for me. If I’d changed my approach back then he’d [have] another plan. Nothing beats some fighters but time.”
After that defining victory over ‘Big George’, Ali went on to defend the titles he won that night no less than ten times in the space of four years, an impressive run of world title defences which included wins over Ken Norton, Joe Frazier and Earnie Shavers.
‘The Greatest’ retired from the sport in December 1981 after consecutive defeats to Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick, leaving a legacy that has stood the test of time in the history of boxing.
