Two-weight champion Billy Joe Saunders has hinted at a return to the ring in 2025.
Saunders has not fought since he suffered an eighth-round stoppage defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in May 2021 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The 35-year-old started the contest against Canelo well, before he eventually got caught with a shot that went on to fracture his eye socket, forcing trainer Mark Tibbs to call a halt to the fight.
The former WBO champion at 160 and 168lbs has remained inactive since that maiden career loss, but has spoken recently about making his long awaited return to the ring, which could come at some point in the next 12 months.
In an interview with iFL TV, Saunders gave an update on his career and a potential rematch with long-term rival Chris Eubank Jr, claiming he is still the ‘baddest’ at super-middleweight.
“You know what, it’s very difficult because you have peace when you’re away from it but you miss it when you’re not around it as well.
We were in strong talks with the Eubank’s team about a month ago now. We were more or less where we needed to be. The only thing stopping things from progressing was the warm-up fight, you can’t expect me to be out the ring three years and just jump into a big fight because of money.
I really, really, miss boxing I really want to be part of it. I’ll still be the baddest super-middleweight in my opinion, definitely in Britain and Europe.”
Saunders is expected to make a final decision on his career in the near future, with a second showdown against Eubank Jr proving to be the most attractive option to the Brit.
