Gennady Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez shared 36 incredible rounds across a memorable trilogy of contests.
‘GGG’ stands firm as one of the most feared and formidable middleweights in boxing history, holding a record breaking 23 knockout victories which spanned 8 years.
Golovkin and Canelo first locked horns in 2017, with the highly anticipated showdown ending in a controversial draw. The pair then clashed for the second time in September 2018, with ‘Canelo’ nicking a majority decision victory that was again met with controversy. They then met for the third and final time in 2022, but this time it was a comprehensive victory for the Mexican icon.
‘GGG’ has not fought since that second defeat to Alvarez, with the 42-year-old now looking like he has entered retirement, despite there not being an official announcement to confirm this.
Speaking to Mayan Tiger Sports, the former unified middleweight king gave his thoughts on a potential showdown between former opponent ‘Canelo’ and David Benavidez, claiming he ‘would love to see’ that fight take place in the future.
“I’m not an expert on ‘Canelo’ so I cannot say whether he will take this fight or not but as a fan of boxing I would love to see this fight. I hope this fight will take place. When is another question, a question of boxing, of business, but that would be an interesting fight to watch.”
Golovkin was then asked to predict the fight, and said it would be a draw in order to force a trilogy.
“It’s a loaded question. I think it would be a draw. In order for a trilogy to happen we need a draw first.”
Benavidez now campaigns at light-heavyweight, but a clash with ‘Canelo’ has yet to be ruled out, which has provided boxing fans with a glimmer of hope.
