Larry Holmes holds his place at the top table of an incredible generation of heavyweights.
‘The Easton Assassin’ held the world heavyweight championship from 1978 to 1985, and is known to have had one of the best jabs in boxing history.
Holmes’ career lasted 29 years, between 1973 and 2002. In that time, he faced an array of legendary heavyweights including Muhammad Ali, Michael Spinks and Mike Tyson to name just a few.
Despite facing so many great opponents throughout his career, ‘The Easton Assassin’ has spoken out and named the one men who was the best of the bunch.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, Holmes revealed Ken Norton as the best fighter he ever faced during his illustrious career.
“No, my toughest fight was Kenny Norton.
I fought Tyson when I was kinda over the hill a little bit. I had retired then come back and fought Mike Tyson and I wasn’t really in shape for it, but you know what, I did what I did at that time. But if I had to do it all over again I would have taken more time and done it right.”
After a brutal 15-round contest, Holmes defeated Norton to become WBC world heavyweight champion, the first world title of what would go on to be an incredible career for the former.
Holmes would go on to defend his title an incredible 20 times over a seven year period, defeating Earnie Shaves, Trevor Berbick and Leon Spinks along the way.
