Floyd Mayweather Sums Up Gervonta Davis And Shakur Stevenson Comparison In Just 4 Words

Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are two of the most exciting fighters in boxing.

Stevenson, who currently holds the WBC lightweight title, is undefeated in 22 professional contests. His most recent victory was back in July when he outpointed Artem Harutyunyan to retain his WBC crown. He was due to return to the ring in October against Welshman Joe Cordina, but the fight was cancelled due to the champion suffering a hand injury.

In the eyes of many, Davis is one of the best fighters in the world right now. The reigning WBA lightweight champion is won all 30 of his professional outings, with 28 coming by knockout. He is due to return to the ring in March 2025, with a showdown against Lamont Roach pencilled in for the 30-year-old.

One man who has shown interest in a fight between ‘Tank’ and Stevenson is former pound for pound superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He spoke to It Is What It Is, where he gave plaudits to both men for being two of the best in the 135lb division, but said Shakur was the most skilful and that ultimately “skills pay the bill”.

“You got guys fighting between 130, 135 and 160. They stacked around that area. As of right now, the two guys… The biggest puncher at 135 would probably be Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, but the most skilful fighter at 135 would be, hands down, Shakur Stevenson.

It’s really all about skills. Pernell Whitaker wasn’t a huge puncher, but he was very exciting, very tough and he fought everybody. Shakur’s trying do the same thing. He want to fight the best they got out there. He’s asking can he fight the best.”

Stevenson will return on February 22 in Saudi Arabia when he faces his WBC mandatory challenger Floyd Schofield. If Davis can get through his scheduled clash with Lamont Roach in March, it could set up a massive showdown with Stevenson at the back end of the year.
