Mike Tyson’s controversial return to boxing is still being criticised over one month on from his clash with Jake Paul.
The former world heavyweight champion took part in a sanctioned professional contest for the first time in just shy of 20 years, as he was outpointed by the YouTube sensation over eight rounds at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The last time ‘Iron’ Mike fought as a professional before facing ‘The Problem Child’ was back in June 2005 when he was beaten by Irishman Kevin McBride at the MCI Center in Washington. Defeat to McBride put an end to Tyson’s 20 year career, where he became the youngest world heavyweight champion in boxing history, a record that he still holds today.
Boxing fans around the world expressed their concerns towards seeing the 58 year old enter the ring once again, especially with a man over 30 years his junior.
Paul’s victory over the heavyweight legend was the 11th of his professional fighting career, which includes wins against MMA legends Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva. The only defeat the 27 year old has suffered was at the hands of Tommy Fury, who he dropped on route to a split decision loss in February 2023.
In an clip shared on X, Tyson reveals he has now questioned why he ever went ahead with the event in the first place.
“The day after the fight I woke up and told my wife ‘Why did I do that? I just don’t know what the hell was going on.”
Tyson has now all but confirmed his retirement from the sport, after initially expressing his intentions to fight once again.
