Oscar De La Hoya has named who he believes is the greatest fighter of all time.
The 52-year-old from California enjoyed an impressive professional career between 1992 and 2008, winning world titles across six weight divisions during this time.
‘The Golden Boy’ picked up a number of career defining victories during his tenure, defeating the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Hector Camacho and Ike Quartey to name just a few.
Despite his consistent dominance, De La Hoya did taste defeat on a handful occasions throughout his career, falling short against former pound-for-pound superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao before he walked away from the sport in 2008.
In an interview with ESNEWS, ‘The Golden Boy’ named Sugar Ray Robinson as the fighter who he believes stands out from the rest as the ‘greatest ever’.
“Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest of all time! That’s basically it, look at this here [his shirt] all the weight divisions, hardest puncher, best footwork, he would fight multiple times a month, took on the very best, took on the toughest challenges. Sugar Ray Robinson, he’s literally the GOAT.”
Robinson had one of, if not the most glittering career of any fighter in the long history of boxing. He fought over 200 times as a professional, suffering just 19 defeats during his tenure. He captured world honours on six occasions, boasting legacy defining defeats against the likes of Henry Armstrong and Jake LaMotta amongst others.
The American icon tragically passed away in 1989 at 67-years-old, leaving behind an incredible legacy that lives on to this very day.
