Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has been a dominant force at super middleweight for almost half a decade.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico was previously the undisputed champion at 168lbs, before he was stripped of his IBF title when he opted to face Edgar Berlanga Jr last September, rather than mandatory challenger William Scull.
The Mexican superstar has lost just twice in his 66-fight career, falling short to Floyd Mayweather in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol in 2022. He boasts wins against the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev and Jermell Charlo in recent years.
One man who has not been impressed with the success of Canelo is former world champion James ‘Lights Out’ Toney.
Speaking to MillCity Boxing, 56-year-old claimed he would be prepared to come out of retirement and ‘destroy’ the Mexican star.
“We put too much emphasis on Canelo. If you look at it, he’s fought all these guys who are lighter than him, or they are past their prime and all of that, you can’t compare this mother****er to me, dog.
I fought the best fighters in their prime. I don’t even want to talk about the mother****er, because he p***es me off.
I could always come out of retirement and whoop his a** right now, I’d f**k him up, for real, I haven’t got a problem doing that!
I’d beat Canelo right now. He can be knocked out, he’s not all that. He’s no James Toney. He’s not in my league, he can’t carry my bags. Stop comparing him to me because there is no match, I would destroy him.”
Toney has not fought in almost 8 years but is leaving the door open on a potential return to the ring in the near future.
