2025 could be the year that boxing fans finally get treated to a showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.
The heavyweight stars have been catalysts for the growth of boxing in the United Kingdom over the last 10 years, but chances of a fight between the pair have always seemed to pass by without materialising.
However, this could all change in 2025 with the pair finally set to meet in what could be the biggest match-up in the history of British boxing, albeit a bout that could and should have happened a while ago.
Fury is fresh off a second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, failing to get revenge on the Ukrainian after his first career defeat back in May. ‘The Gypsy King’ now finds himself having to make the difficult choice of either walking away from boxing, or dusting himself off and fighting on.
For ‘AJ’, he appears to have confirmed his desire to continue with his career after that shock defeat to IBF world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois in September. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed the former 2-time heavyweight champion is planning on fighting a couple of times in 2025.
One man who knows both men better than most is heavyweight legend Wladimir Klitschko. He suffered a shock unanimous decision loss to Fury back in 2015 and then returned to the ring two years later only to get stopped by AJ in the eleventh round.
After that defeat he gave his prediction on all British heavyweight clash.
“Hands down Joshua. He is getting to be the complete fighter. Technically, size-wise, weight-wise, power-wise. And he is a good learner.
The other guy [Fury], like a fart in the wind it is there and it is gone. In the history of boxing there are a lot of examples of this kind of guy.”
Although ‘The Gypsy King’ is yet to make a final decision on his future, an all-British showdown with his long-term rival could tempt him into remaining in the sport for just a while longer.
