On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Oleksandr Gvozdyk (13-0, 11 KOs) made a statement with a knockout win against Yunieski Gonzalez  (18-3, 14 KOs) on the undercard of Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Jason Sosa at the MGM National Harbor.

Gvozdyk has been a wildly successful prospect and Gonzalez presented what many believed to be another tough challenge in a fast-rising career. Gvozdyk handled the challenge with ease, outboxing Gonzalez from the outside with lightning-fast hands.

The final punch totals, while academic, showed absolute dominance on the part of the Ukrainian, who landed a whopping 90 more punches than Gonzalez over a short and concussive three rounds.

Gonzalez had no answer for Gvozdyk’s fast hands and hard shots, who is pining hard for a title shot at his weight division of Light Heavyweight.

After the fight, Gvozdyk told HBO analyst Max Kellerman that he wants to fight for a title, that he’s ready, and doesn’t care who he needs to fight. Gvozdyk wished former champion Sergey Kovalev good luck in his rematch with current champion Andre Ward, but noted he’d stand toe to toe with his Russian friend if it meant getting a title shot.

Gvozdyk proved impressive in one of his biggest tests yet, and is more than likely ready to move up in competition.
