Omar Figueroa (23-0-1, 17 KOs) scored a ninth-round TKO victory over Daniel Estrada (32-2-1, 24 KOs) to successfully defend his WBC Lightweight title at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The scheduled 12-round fight was the first televised bout of a triple-header presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime Sports.

From the opening bell, the 24-year-old native of Weslaco, Texas pushed the action, pressuring Estrada despite receiveing several punches in the process.

Estrada, a 29-year-old native of Distrito Federal, Mexico, landed several counter punches on Figueroa, but was unable to deal with Figueroa’s overwhelming pressure.

Figueora landed powerful shots to the body and head of Estrada before the end of the seventh round. It was a quick flurry that, after several rounds of relentless pressure, finally drew concern from referee Raul Caiz Sr.

It seemed as if the end were near for Estrada, but he was saved by the bell.

The one-minute break between rounds, it seems, helped him immensely.

Indeed, in the eighth round, Figueroa engaged Estrada at close range but was received by a reinvigorated Estrada, who managed to push Figueroa into a corner to land several right hands and left hooks.

In the following round, however, Estrada was knocked down before receiving a flurry that forced the referee to stop the fight.

Figueroa did well if we take his troubles with weight into consideration. Nevertheless, as he told Showtime’s Jim Gray in his post-fight interview, he will still make the move to Light Welterweight.

“It’s nothing against against the 135 division, but it’s my body—it just doesn’t feel comfortable anymore,” said Figueroa.
