After winning the 2014 Boxcino Tournament on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights last May, lightweight contender Petr Petrov expected his follow up to be back on ESPN2 versus “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy on January 16, 2015.

Unfortunately, the fight died on the scale the night before when Lundy (25-4-1, 12 KOs) missed the 135-pound limit by four pounds after accepting the fight on just 10 days notice.

Petrov (35-4-2, 17 KOs) and his team never considered going through with the fight even though Lundy was willing to pay half of his purse to Petrov.

“From the beginning we told him the fight would be at 135 pounds and if you don’t make weight there isn’t a fight,” said Petrov. “He said he would make the weight, no problem.”

Petrov added that he was annoyed the fight was off because of all the work he put in and the fact that he was out of the ring for eight months.

“There are weight divisions in boxing for a reason and he’s nobody special for me to have to go up in weight,” said Petrov.

Petrov, born in Russia and now living in Spain, has moved on from Lundy and is back in the gym after only taking a one-week break.

Ranked No. 2 by the WBA and No. 7 by the WBO, Petrov believes he can be one fight away from a world-title shot and is anxiously awaiting his next opportunity.

“The 135 pound division has great champions and with hard work and preparation I can win a title against one of them,” stated Petrov.
