Pod Index: Boxing Judges’ Consistency Statistics

A lot of the times, boxing judges receive tons of criticism. It seems that no matter what their track record is, if they make one “questionable” call in the eyes of fans, they are branded a bad judge.

A lot of the times, boxing judges receive tons of criticism. It seems that no matter what their track record is, if they make one “questionable” call in the eyes of fans, they are branded a bad judge.

Well, the good folks at PodIndex.org have created a great way to track the consistency of each judge and break down how often each judge agrees with the other on a round-by-round basis.

From Pod Index:

Based on our analysis, we feel that any judge with a Pod Index of 50% or greater (over at least 60 rounds scored) can be considered reasonably consistent. As you can see below, all world championship judges score above 50%. Over large enough sample sizes, judges tend to score fights alike. It is only the so-called controversial decisions that receive media attention and scrutiny. We hope that the full body of a judge’s work will be better appreciated by the information we provide. Most judges, most of the time, do a good job. Sometimes they disagree with the fans, the media, and each other. The statistics below reveal how often they agree with each other on a round-by-round basis. Essentially, we attempt to answer the question, holding everything else equal, “how mainstream is each judge?”

Disclaimer: We are not claiming that judges with low Pod Index Scores are bad judges. The Pod Index is simply a measurement of round by round variation compared to other judges.

Below are the Top 10 most consistent judges according to Pod Index. Visit there website for a complete list of judges.
