On July 11, the East and the West will meet each other in a matchup between California’s Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs) and Philadelphia’s “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy (25-4-1, 12 KOs).

The bout will be presented by Golden Boy Promotion’s and headlines a triple header on HBO Latino, taking place at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

I caught up with Lundy and right from the start, his excitement for the fight was evident. Lundy has made a name for himself for taking on fighters in their own backyard and this fight is no different to him.

From the start of our phone call until the very end, it was high energy and confidence from the Philly fighter. Here’s what he had to say about his upcoming bout against Herrera.

Round By Round BoxingHey how’s it going Hank?

Hank Lundy: What’s going on Pete! C’mon man I need more energy from you man! Let’s get pumped about this fight!

RBRBoxing:  You’re absolutely right Hank! How are you feeling and how’s camp going so far?

HL:  Oh man, camp has been going great, as a matter of fact it’s been excellent and I’m ready to fight.

RBRBoxing: This is your first time fighting in L.A. correct?

HL: Yeah, actually it is, and I’m more than happy to be coming to L.A. I have a lot of fans in California and they always ask me when I’ll be fighting in L.A. so get ready guys because the Hammer is coming to you!

RBRBoxing: You’ve made it a habit of fighting guys on their home turf and Herrera is a very tough fighter. Would you say he’s your toughest challenge yet?

HL: Well, no. I’ll just leave it at that. The hardest fights I’ve had were when I was fighting at four rounds, fighting journeymen. Even the guys at my six-round fights were tough. Let me put it to you this way, Hammerin’ Hank is an old school fighter. The fighters we see today would not compare to the fighters from back in the day. The throwback training I’ve been getting has me ready to go.

RBRBoxing: Well I can definitely sense your confidence for this fight. What have you seen from Mauricio Herrera that has you confident he can’t beat you?

HL: Well for one thing he’s slow. He can try to box a little bit, but at the end of the day I have the faster hands, I have the movement, and I have the punching power. There are a couple of things that I have noticed that he doesn’t like and I plan to expose him. I’m going into this fight with the mentality that Mauricio is the WBC world champion and I want to take it away from him.

RBRBoxing: Do you think a win over Herrera could possibly set you up for another big name fight? Maybe for one of the major titles in your division?

HL: I’ll tell you this, after this fight I’ll be demanding a title shot. I should’ve already been a champion by now.

RBRBoxing: What do you feel will be some of the keys to victory for you?

HL: Well the biggest thing will be fighting my fight. Fighting the Hank Lundy way and that means putting on a show and fighting smart.

RBRBoxing: There are plenty of opportunities available for you in the Jr. Welterweight division. Give me some names you’d like to see if you win this fight.

HL: Well I don’t want to jump the gun right now too much. Herrera is my main focus but after him, give me Terence Crawford or give me the winner of Lucas Matthyse vs. Viktor Postol. I also wouldn’t mind fighting Adrian Broner. I wanted that fight at 135, but it never happened.

RBRBoxing: Speaking of that, Broner is taking on Shawn Porter this Saturday. Who do you like in that fight?

HL: If Broner can stay disciplined and stick to his boxing he’s got a chance, but I’ve been working with Shawn this training camp and we have been helping each other get ready for our fights and he looks great and he is very strong. Everyone keeps talking about the catch weight, but I assure you that Shawn won’t have any trouble with the weight.

RBRBoxing: That’s good to know man. So tell me what can we expect July 11?

HL: I’ll keep it simple man, expect a great show. Expect Hammerin’ Hank to come out there with the fastest hands and with powerful hands. If I were you I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

RBRBoxing: I believe it. Well thanks for taking the time with us today and good luck July 11.

HL:  No problem, thank you.
