Jose Ramirez Defeats Amir Imam to Win Vacant WBC Title

Jose Ramirez (22-0, 16 KOs) fought his way to a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Amir Imam ( 21-2, 18 KOs) in the main event at Madison Square Garden Theater.

The pride of Avenal, California fights for his family, his community and for farmers’ water rights but on Saturday night, Jose Ramirez (22-0, 16 KOs) fought his way to a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Amir Imam ( 21-2, 18 KOs) in the main event at The Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Ramirez captured the vacant WBC Super Lightweight world title with scores of 115-113, 117-111 and a 120-108.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Ramirez. “It’s an honor to be a world champion. I dedicate this fight to all the immigrants. I fight for them.”

New York was treated to a tough fight between two skilled and durable fighters. Ramirez was able to attack the body early while Imam tried to keep the distance with his jab.

Ramirez came forward and was very active with body shots and multiple combinations. In Round 6, Ramirez stunned Imam with a hard right hand.

Imam could not hold off Ramirez as the central valley product landed 87 power punches through six rounds.

“I should have done more to the body,” said Imam. “I just keep thinking of all the things I should’ve done.”

The 2012 U.S. Olympian dominated the championship rounds with vicious body shots and straight rights. In the 11th round, Imam’s right eye began to swell from the barrage of power punches by Ramirez.

Ramirez peppered Imam with rights and lefts in the 12th round but he was able to hang on until the end. Imam landed clean shots throughout the fight but wasn’t able to hurt Ramirez, who showed grit and determination.

“Amir is a great fighter and he came well prepared,” said Ramirez. “That’s why we gave the fans a great fight.”

Up next for Ramirez is a mandatory bout with WBC interim 140-pound champion Regis Prograis who was seated ringside.
