On Saturday, November 21, 2015, Canelo Alvarez scored a dominant 12-round unanimous decision victory against Miguel Cotto to win the Lineal and WBC Middleweight titles at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Also on the card were Francisco Vargas, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Jayson Velez, who all scored wins on the HBO pay-per-view telecast.

Results:

Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez, 12 rounds, for Cotto’s Lineal Middleweight title

After an early boxing match, Alvarez’s size and strength prevailed over Cotto. The crafty, young fighter also displayed his defensive and counterpunching abilities as he landed counter hooks to the body and counter uppercuts.

Alvarez scored a unanimous decision victory with scores of 117-111, 119-109, and 118-110. Alvarez is now the Lineal and WBC Middleweight champion.

Takashi Miura vs.Francisco Vargas, 12 rounds, for Miura’s WBC Junior Lightweight title

Vargas scored a ninth-round knockout victory against Miura in a close match-up in which both men were knocked down.

Vargas’ skill and his chin prevailed, earning him the WBC strap.

Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Drian Francisco, 10 rounds, Junior Featherweights

Rigondeaux scored an easy UD win agaisnt Francisco. Rigondeaux barely threw a punch in the fight, but nonetheless won with scores of 97-93, 100-90 and 100-90.

Jayson Velez vs. Ronny Rios, 10 rounds, Featherweights

Rios scored a ten-round unanimous decision victory against Velez to win the WBC Silver Featherweight title.

Although he was deducted a point for a low blow, Rios won with comfortable scores of 97-92, 95-94, and 96-93.

Randy Caballero vs. Lee Haskins, 12 rounds, for Caballero’s IBF Bantamweight title

The fight was cancelled by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to Caballero’s inability to make weight.

Alberto Machado vs. Tyrone Luckey, 6 rounds, Lightweights

Machado knocked out Luckey in Round 1 of their scheduled six-rounder.

Zhang Zhilei vs. Juan Goode, 4 rounds, Heavyweights

Zhilei scored a four-round unanimous decision against Goode.

Zhilei was in control for most of the fight, though he was dropped in Round 4 work a right hand.

“I feel very good that I am still undefeated,” said Zhilei.

“I was careless during that knockdown. I am going to keep finghting until I am a world champion,” said Zhilei.

Jose Martinez vs. Oscar Mojica, 8 rounds, Junior Bantamweights

Martinez scored an eight-round decision against Mojica, and won with three scores of 78-74.

Hector Tanajara Jr. vs. Jose Fabian Naranjo, 4 rounds, Lightweights Tanajara scored a first-round knockout via a shot to the body.

“I am happy that I got to fight on the undercard of Cotto-Canelo, one of the biggest fights of the year,” said Tanajara.

“Because of this I knew I had to train for this fight and make sure I looked good in ring and today I accomplished it. This is a win for Mexico and I hope I started the trend tonight, victories for Mexico, go Canelo,” Tanajara concluded.
