Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) wowed the American public for the first time back in May of this year on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin‘s knockout victory over Willie Monroe on HBO.

Gonzalez has been confirmed for another Golovkin undercard, this time on October 17 at Madison Square Garden when Golovkin takes on IBF Middleweight title holder, David Lemieux on HBO pay-per-view.

While Gonzalez has flown under the radar for years, he’s now being universally recognized as one of the best fighters in the world, landing at No. 2 on pound-for-pound lists for the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and Ring TV, respectively.

Though no official announcement has been made yet, Dan Rafael of ESPN is reporting that Gonzalez will likely be taking on former unified titleholder Brian Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs) on October 17.

“Everything is pointing towards Viloria,” said Carlos Blandon, Gonzalez’s manager (via ESPN.com).

“I’m glad Viloria’s team jumped back in the race. I believe he is an excellent fighter and will help Roman give another amazing performance,” said Blandon.

Giovani Segura of Mexico and Puerto Rican contender McWilliams Arroyo are also said to be in the running to land the matchup against Gonzalez, but Viloria certainly brings bigger name recognition for the pay-per-view.
