Sergey Kovalev: “I’d Be Happy to Fight Andre Ward”

Sergey Kovalev is preparing for his July 25 clash with Nadjib Mohammedi but is ready for all challengers.

Sergey Kovalev is a monster in the Light Heavyweight division.

At 33 years old, the native of Russia has scored wins over big names such as Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal, and in the process has collected three of the maior four sanctioning belts.

Nevertheless, he still feels he has a tough fight against Nadjib Mohammedi on July 25 at the Madalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“He’s fast. He has stamina. He’s not stupid; he’s an intelligent fighter,” said Kovalev at a recent media workout.

Kovalev is still confident of his position in the division, and looks to show his “beautiful boxing” in the HBO-televised fight.

“I’m focused. I don’t care who my opponent is. I will show beautiful boxing (on July 25),” said Kovalev.

While a fight against lineal and Ring magazine champion Adonis Stevenson is unlikely for the moment,  the second most dominant fighter in the world just happens to reign a few pounds lower, though he has just come back from a long layoff.

“I’ll be happy to fight Andre Ward. He’s a dangerous fighter,” said Kovalev.

Indeed, the 31-year-old lineal 168-pound champion is considered as one of the best fighters in the world, using his rugged–though often criticised as boring–style to beat the likes of Carl Froch, Chad Dawson and Arthur Abraham.

However, after taking two years off due to his promotional issues with Goossen Tutor, Ward barely returned in a tune-up fight against Paul Smith at a catch weight of 172 pounds.

Thus, it is unclear whether he will go down to 168 or move up to 175, making a fight with Kovalev uncertain for now.

Nevertheless, perhaps knowing this alresdy, Kovalev said, “I’m ready for anybody. I’m open for any fight.”
