“Sugar” Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) returned from a two-year layoff and defeated Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 KOs) last night at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

An estimated 4,000 people in attendance witnessed five exciting bouts, ending the night with Mosley winning via body shot after a back-and-fourth entertaining brawl.

The fight began with both fighters on the offensive. Mosley began to take over the bout after a few rounds while the out-of-shape Mayorga began to breathe heavily.

During the third round, Mayorga mocked Mosley and ate a few well-placed shots to the chin.  The punches did little effect on Mayorga and he proceeded to grab his crotch in retaliation.

During the fifth round, Mosley smelled blood and picked up the pace. During an exchange, Mosley was able to land a devastating left-hook to Mayorga’s body in minute 2:59 of the sixth round.  It was a delayed reaction but the Nicaraguan took a knee and was unable to continue.

Mosley seemed content with the result during the post-fight press conference.

“He came to fight; he gave us a good show,” Mosley said. “He gave the fans and everyone a great fight.”

Mosley mentioned Mexican superstar Juan Manuel Marquez and IBF Welterweight champion Kell Brook as possible future opponents. He also stated that he would like rematches with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

The rematch between these two combatants resulted in a more exciting bout than their first fight in 2008. The crowd was pleased from the first televised fight and cheered throughout the Mosley vs. Mayorga bout.

After watching the fight, now the question becomes if both fighters should retire or continue on.

Mayorga should definitely retire and take his health into consideration.

Mosley did exactly what he needed to do and looked good doing it. Even with a knockout victory, realistically speaking, it will be hard for Mosley to keep up with the overwhelming talents in the 154 and 160 weight classes.

He mentioned Marquez, but he is a smaller opponent and will likely not take the offer.

Whether Shane Mosley or Ricardo Mayorga continue fighting is uncertain, however, they at least gave the fans one more great night of fights.

Who do you think Shane Mosley should fight next after knocking out Ricardo Mayorga?
