On this day in 2008, Antonio Margarito defeated Miguel Cotto by TKO in Round 11.
At the time of stoppage, Margarito was ahead by two rounds on two judges’ scorecards, with one judge having it even.
After being caught with illegal plaster on his wraps before his bout with Shane Mosley, Margarito’s previous wins–including the win over Cotto–were immediately questioned.
Cotto firmly believes that Margarito knowingly cheated, having this to say after the Tijuana Tornado was caught with loaded gloves:
All I know is when everybody gets their hands wrapped, they know what’s in them. They know if there’s something in their hand wraps or not. As a fighter, you know if there’s something in there.
