Kyrone Davis (12-1, 5 KOs) worked for his split-decision win on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, over the very sturdy Mark Anothony Hernandez (9-1, 2 KOs), giving the tough kid out of Fresno his first professional loss.

Davis, fighting out of Wilmington, Delaware, knew he was in for a slugfest from the first second of the opening bell. There were was not much running in this one as both fighters came to give the fans in Nice, CA a show.

Hernandez started out well and stunned Davis early in the second round with a pair of uppercuts. Davis never wavered though and kept coming forward as he kept digging the body of Hernandez.

You could actually hear Davis’ corner on the telecast late in the third round signaling and yelling at their fighter that Hernandez’s body language was changing due to the body shots he was taking. What took place in the middle rounds was a fight of attrition, as this was both fighters’ first 10-round bout in their professional careers.

As Davis was digging the body for a lot of the bout, a questionable decision took place in the seventh round as referee Dan Stell deducted a point from Davis for a low blow.

Commentators Brian Custer and Sergio Mora didn’t agree with the low-blow call and with the fortunate circumstances for us viewers with instant replay, it looked like a clean shot on the belt.

With both fighters sucking for air in the late rounds, you saw Hernandez start to show a bit more urgency, but Davis’ work rate stalled off a lot of Hernandez’s chances at momentum.

For both fighters going the distance in their first 10-round bout, the final round didn’t disappoint as they stood right in the phone booth they both occupied for a majority of the fight.

When the judges scorecards were announced, Davis was declared the winner with scores of 96-93, 95-94 and 96-93. He worked for this one.
