On Friday, September 2, 2016, Lamont Roach Jr. improved to 12-0, 4 KOs with a dominating performance over former world-title challenger, Mario Antonio Macias (28-20, 14 KOs).
The bout streamed live on RingTVLive.com and was part of Golden Boy Promotions‘ popular LA Fight Club series, which is held at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California.
Roach earned a third-round stoppage victory, knocking Macias down three times before referee Zac Young called a halt to the bout at the :07 second mark in Round 3.
The most eye-popping knockdown was courtesy of a Roach left hook that landed right on the button and dropped Macias against the ropes.
“We work on that [the left hand] a lot. Coach Roach tells me I have a nice hook,” said Roach after the fight.
Roach is known as an educated boxer and calculated technician–one who does not waste energy when executing his offensive attacks.
But in recent decision victories, his team–and fans alike–have asked for more of a killer instinct, which they certainly got out of their fighter on Friday night.
“I knew my punches were breaking him down at the beginning, and it was going to be a matter of time before I knocked him out,” said Roach.
Roach’s work in training–which for this camp included sparring with top DC-area fighters such as David Grayton–has definitely helped him progress.
“I spar with world champions, former world champions, and anything else in-between,” said Roach.
Roach is now 3-0 this year and continues to show why he is one of boxing‘s brightest young talents.
“I felt strong in there and Coach Roach told me, ‘if we don’t have to go eight, don’t go eight,'” concluded Roach.
