Fight fans the world over are once again unified in shared anticipation for boxing’s next major PPV event: the WBC middleweight world championship between Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on Saturday, May 7th.
Canelo is the reigning middleweight champion and Amir Kahn, who normally fights at 139lbs, will have to go up two weight divisions to match Canelo at a catch-weight of 155lbs. The task won’t be easy. Canelo, a naturally larger fighter, is well-known for his punching power and boxing critics have long questioned the durability of Amir Kahn’s chin. Kahn, on the other hand, fights with speed and accuracy which he and his team think will be enough to earn the upset. Floyd Mayweather, who handed Canelo his only loss, used speed and accuracy too.
According to Canelo, “every fighter is different, every fighter brings different skills and you have to adjust for that. For Amir, we have focused on increasing my hand speed, counter punching and preparing for lots of movement and footwork. We believe Amir will adopt a similar style to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Erislandy Lara, however, we have made sure that I am prepared for that style of boxing and anything he brings to the table to not be surprised on fight night.”
When Amir was asked what he thought about the fight, he said “I’m a big fan of Canelo, I think he’s a great fighter. He’s young and he’s explosive and he’s powerful. But it’s my time to show how good I am…being the underdog is only going to drive me even harder.” Regardless of Amir Kahn’s mental state, certain facts remain; Canelo has 2 knockouts in his last 5 fights…Kahn has none.
