I think the real question here is why Ashley Theophane, a long-time journeyman whose best win is a gift decision over Delvin Rodriguez, is getting a title shot.
Why? Well, because Adrien Broner is Adrien Broner. One minute, he’s jumping up in weight and dismembering a prime Antonio DeMarco. The other minute, he’s fighting…Ashley Theophane.
Theophane really has no business competing for a world title. He has never truly proven himself in any noteworthy victory. Instead, he offers a few losses to some name opponents (Danny Garcia and Pablo Cesar Cano).
While I have always been on the fence with Broner’s level as a fighter, his talents are unquestionable. His versatility, athleticism and surprising amount of heart should be too much for Theophane to overcome.
I expect Theophane to come forward and meet Broner in the center of the ring. Theophane should take the opening rounds, as Broner has a tendency to give them away like candy.
From the middle rounds onward, however, Broner will kick it into gear and pick off Theophane with straight rights and uppercuts on the inside. Expect a fun, albeit one-sided, 12-round scrap. Broner by a clear decision.

Hard to pick against Adrien Broner here. Even with recent charges.
Ashley Theophane is an average boxer with average power. But he does have a granite chin—Pablo Cesar Cano hit him with everything and anything he could and Ashley hardly flinched—and he did give Danny Garcia hell back in 2010.
That kind of heart will take him the distance. But in the year of our lord two thousand and sixteen, Broner will be too quick for the 35-year-old Theophane.

I am going for Adrien Broner, via stoppage, in the latter stages of the fight.
I feel Ashley Theophane’s toughness will withstand Broner’s shots during the early stages, and he may rough Broner up on the inside.
But he will eventually yield–particularly when Broner’s vicious uppercuts start landing profusely.

It’s hard to imagine a fighter having any more distractions than Adrien Broner has faced leading up to his fight against Ashley Theophane.
Broner’s idol, Floyd Mayweather, has bashed him publicly, he has agreed to turn himself into authorities on Monday due to a warrant issued for his arrest and he came in overweight on Thursday and forfeited his title–all in less than a week.
For all of his shortcomings in the maturity department, Broner is a tough SOB with some serious skills inside the ring. He’s had trouble matching skills with top-notch opponents such as Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter–but Theophane doesn’t hold a candle to their sun.
If Broner is even remotely focused for this fight, he’ll win. If won’t be a wipe out, because Theophane is tough too, but it should be a unanimous decision victory for “The Problem.” And following the wacky AB script, don’t be surprised if Broner calls Mayweather out after his victory.
