On Saturday, March 5, 2016, hard-hitting Cuban Heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) takes on Washington DC’s Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in a 12-round heavyweight fight for the WBA Interim Heavyweight title held by Ortiz.
The fights will take place at the DC Armory in Washington, DC and are presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with King Kong Boxing and Warriors Boxing and Promotions.
In the co-main event, Sadam Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) takes on Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) in a 12-round fight for the vacant WBO Welterweight title.
Also featured on the card will be Robinson Castellanos vs. Oscar Escandon in a 12-round fight for the WBC Interim Featherweight title.
The HBO Boxing After Dark telecast begins live at 10:00 pm, EST/PST, while the Ring TV live stream begins at 9:00 pm, EST.

Ortiz scored a sixth-round TKO victory against Thompson in front of 4,585 fans.

The HBO telecast opened with Sadam Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) taking on Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) for the vacant WBO Welterweight title.
It was a tight contest early on and through six rounds RBRBoxing had it even three rounds a piece.
But in the eighth round, Vargas landed a monstrous looping right hand which dropped Ali towards the end of the round.
In Round 9, Ali was still shaky as he looked to get his feet under him. He was dropped a second time, and although he got back up, the referee jumped in shortly after and stopped the bout giving Vargas a TKO victory at 2:09 of Round 9.
Robinson Castellanos vs. Oscar Escandon
After suffering an early-round knockdown, Oscar Escandon came on like a freight train and pounded Robinson Castellanos to the body, eventually stopping him in Round 7 by TKO.

“I feel very happy about this victory it’s been a long time coming and I’m very proud to take the title back to my country,” said Escandon.
“Robinson is a very tough guy he came to fight, but my training camp showed in this event. I’ve been trying very hard sacrificing a lot to be at this stage if my career, including spenind time with my family. When I was dropped the first time it was just a sting I didn’t get hurt and I realize that I needed to fight with more intelligence to make sure I secured this victory.”

Lamont Roach Jr. fought in front of his hometown crowd in Washington, DC and delivered an exciting eight-round decision win.
Roach, who scored a knockdown in Round 1, mixed a strong combination of punches to the body and head throughout the bout.
But, Jesus Lule was game and did not quit as he continued coming forward while eating a barrage of punches.

“I feel very good, didn’t get the knock-out but it still feels good to get the decision,” said Roach.
“He was a tough guy, we expect them to always to be tough that’s what we train for. I’m looking forward to staying busy this year and move up in rounds.”
Zachary Ochoa vs. Rosbel Montoya
Zachary Ochoa pitched nearly a perfect shutout of Rosbel Montoya. Ochoa won a six-round unanimous decision with quick combinations.

“I felt like I put on a good performance tonight,” said Ochoa.
“The fighter was tough but I was in control the whole time. This fight really helped me shake off the rust and now I started 2016 with a great victory.”
D’Mitrius Ballard vs. Leosvy Mayedo
On Friday, Leosvy Mayedo weighed in at 175 pounds. The problem with that is that he was facing D’Mitrius Ballard in a Super Middleweight bout.
Ballard’s trainer assured RBRBoxing that they would still take their Cuban opponent out and that’s exactly what happened.

Ballard improves to 12-0, 8 KOs and is definitely a prospect to watch in the Super Middleweight division.
“I wanted to feel him out in the first round and he did catch me with a shot but nothing that really hurt me,” said Ballard.
“By the beginning of the second round I knew I had him and it was only a matter of time. It’s been three years since I fought here, coming back and fighting in front of my hometown is very rewarding. Kevin Rivers Jr. returned to the ring for the first time since dropping his first pro fight late in 2015. Rivers gave his partisan hometown crowd lots to cheer about as he outworked a durable Angel Aispuro over six rounds.

“I felt like I had a lot to prove tonight and my goal was to secure a victory in front of my hometown. Not only did I do that tonight but I also put on a good show and made my hometown proud.”
Damon Allen vs. Daniel Perales
Damon Allen, the undefeated Golden Boy Promotions prospect, won a hard-fought six-round decision over Perales. An exciting fight that had good two way action.

“The guy was tough, he kept coming and wouldn’t give,” said Allen.
“I like fights like that. They challenge me to be better and think on how to overcome a tough opponent. I think that if the fight was scheduled for more rounds I would have gotten the knockout, but I am glad with the decision.”
Todd Unthank-May vs. Alexander Johnson
In the first bout of the evening, Todd Unthank-May–who hadn’t fought since November of 2013–scored a six-round unanimous decision victory over hometown fighter, Alexander Johnson.
Unthank-May scored two knockdowns in the fight and improves to 9-0, 3 KOs.
