On Saturday, April 30, 2016 former world champion Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) scored a fourth-round knockout victory against Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA.
The fight was a rematch of their 2011 fight,which Ortiz won, and was televised on FOX.
Berto, a Haitian-born fighter, began the fight by keeping Ortiz at a distance with quick jabs and short counter right hands.
Ortiz, a native of Garden City, Kansas, kept is distance as well in the opening round, but by Round 2, Ortiz began boxing by using his legs and by pawing with his jab.
Ortiz’s boxing allowed him to score the first knockdown of the fight, caused a straight left hand that immediately sent Berto down.
“I wasn’t hurt by the first knockdown, more mad at myself for getting caught,” said Berto.
However, Berto would soon time Ortiz’s offense with a right uppercut that dropped him hard in Round 4.
“I didn’t really lose control. I dropped my hand and he caught me,” said Ortz. “He is a hard puncher just like myself.’
Berto, knowing he had badly hurt Ortiz, immediately went for the kill.
“Once he went down it was over. I knew he was hurt and I went right after him. He couldn’t take my power,” said Berto, who dropped Ortiz with another flurry of punches.
Ortiz made it to Jack Reiss’ 10-count, but he did not respond to the referee’s questioning, forcing him to stop the fight.
In his post-fight interview, Berto said that he’d welcome a fight with WBC Welterweight titlist Danny Garcia.
