In a minor upset on Saturday, April 28, 25-year-old Angel Sarinana (8-7-2, 3 KOs) defeated previously unbeaten Dimash Niyazov (13-1-3, 6 KOs) by unanimous decision in the opening bout of the Daniel Jacobs-Maciej Sulecki undercard.

The bout took place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The official scores at ringside were 59-52, 59-53, 58-54.

Sarinana dropped Niyazov twice in the fifth round and had the 29-year-old fighter hurt along the ropes attacking him with combinations of left hooks and straight right hands. Referee Eddie Claudio took a close look at stopping the bout but the usually fleet of foot Niyazov was just barely able to move his head and stay alive to survive the round.

Niyazov, a heralded prospect, from Kazakhstan now working as a New York City police officer in Brooklyn was outworked from the opening round when Sarinana threw multiple shots to Niyazov’s one-at-a-time punches.

Sarinana, from Mexico, had a huge second round, battering Niyazov’s face and walked through any offense the fighter from Brooklyn was able to muster.

By the third round Niyazov’s right eye was busted open and he completely stopped moving his head and had no answer for Sarinana’s counter left hook.

Following the knockdowns in the fifth, Niyazov attemped a last stand in the sixth and final round when the Mexican fighter appeared to be winded–but it was too little too late.
