Abner Mares (27-1-1, 21 KOs) knocked out Jose Ramirez (25-4, 15 KOs) at the very end of the fifth round of a scheduled 10-round Super Featherweight fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The fight was the co-feature of a quadruple-header presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime Sports.
Mares, 29, of Guadalajara, Mexico dominated the fight in each round with right and left hooks to the body and head of the smaller Ramirez, 27, of Mazatlan, Mexico.
Mares was ready and willing to exchange with Ramirez in every round and scored knockdowns in Rounds 1, 3, and 5, before Ramirez’s corner stopped the fight before the start of Round 6.
Mares had recently made some changes to his training team after being knocked out by Jhonny Gonzalez in August of 2013.
Mares then hired Virgil Hunter as his trainer but, after looking too tentative in his comeback fight against Jonathan Oquendo in September, Mares re-hired his previous trainer, Clemente Medina, to return to the fan-friendly style that had won him titles in three different divisions.
“I’m going to conquer the Featherweight division. Believe me, Abner Mares is back,” said Mares before mentioning Johnny Gonzalez, Nicholas Walters, Vasyl Lomachenko and Evgeny Gradovich–all of whom hold a Featherweight title–as possible opponents.
