WEIGHTS FROM GERMANY FOR WBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
DEMETRIUS ANDRADE 153 lbs (69.6 K)
JACK CULCAY 153 lbs (69.5 K)
Undefeated former Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade and his camp have been in Germany all week as he gets ready to take on WBA Super Welterweight champion Jack Culcay in their long awaited showdown Saturday, March 11th at the Fredrich Eberthalle in Ludwigshaten, Germany, for Culcay’s WBA title.
Andrade, the former WBO champ and US Olympian brings a 23-0 16KO’S record and hails from Providence, RI into the fight while Culcay stands at 22-1 11KO’S, Darmstadt, Germany, as they battle 12 rounds for the WBA Super Welterweight crown near Culcay’s hometown.
Andrade was very impressive in his last outing on June 11th, 2016, as he became the first fighter to stop perineal contender Willie Nelson in the 12th round.
Culcay has made 2 defenses of his WBA Interim belt with the last a 9th round stoppage of Jean Carlos Prada on April 9th of last year.
The fighters have history with each other previously meeting in the 2007 World Amateur Championships where Andrade dominated Culcay on his way to winning the championship. Culcay won the amateur world championship in the following world championships (2009) making this a rare battle between two former amateur world champions.
At the final press conference, both fighters were anxious to get to Saturday fight night. Jack Culcay said was ready to avenge his loss years ago in the amateurs to Demetrius Andrade and is a much better fighter now. Andrade praised what Culcay had accomplished but said he was confident he would bring the title back home to the USA.
Andrade also stated: “I would like to thank Star Boxing and Banner Promotions and my team for getting me in great shape for this fight. I beat him as an amateur and I will beat him as a pro. I am going to give Jack a reality check right on his chin”.
In return, Culcay claimed “I am ready for any kind of check Demetrius is going to give me! I have been waiting for an opportunity like this for almost 10 years now,” and in regards to Demetrius being the betting favorite in spite of Culcay being the champion and fighting in his hometown, Culcay said: “The odds just motivate me more. Maybe I will go to the bookies and place a bet…that way, I won’t just derail the “Andrade Express” but i will also make some money”.
At the press conference, Andrade co-promoter Joe DeGuardia said: “this should be an exciting matchup as both were former amateur world champs and Culcay is a tough fighter defending his championship at home. However Demetrius is a tremendously talented fighter and I expect he will become a world champion for the second time. Yes, we are in the hometown of Culcay but I am not worried because i know Demetrius has the skills to take care of his business in that ring”.
The bout is being promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing®, Banner Promotions, and Sauerland Promotions.
