Friday night’s fights on Showtime–which were part of ShoBox: The Next Generation–was a quadruple header from The Space at Westbury in New York.
Undefeated, Antoine Douglas (17-0, 11 KOs) won the vacant WBA Fedelatin middleweight title by TKO in the sixth against Thomas LaManna (16-1, 7 KOs).
From the starting bell, Douglas was quick to set the pace against LaManna. Douglas established a good jab, and fast combinations while LaManna was still in a “feel out” mode.
Throughout the continuing rounds, LaManna never looked comfortable against the faster Douglas, and was never able to pull the trigger.
In Round 6, LaManna showed he was overwhelmed with shots as he took a quick knee. A few moments later, Douglas dropped LaManna again, and was back up before the count ended.
Douglas knew what would happen with his next fury of combinations, as LaManna saw the canvas for the third time and the referee immediately waved off the fight.
The co-main event featured Ismael Barroso (17-0, 16 KOs) winning by TKO in the fifth round against Issouf Kinda (17-3, 7 KOs).
What was a decent matchup between two fighters with the same physique and awkward stance, quickly turned sour after four short rounds for Kinda.
Both men threw hard combos with their long reach, but Barroso showed more power and dropped his opponent in the fifth by a strong left hook.
As Kinda returned to his corner for the sixth round, he seemed concerned about his vision and told the ringside doctor that he could not see. With much concern from the doctor as well, he advised the referee that Kinda could not continue and halted the fight.
Opening the Showtime telecast were two quick knockouts. Jerry Odom (13-1, 12 KOs) won a TKO victory in the first round against Andrew Hernandez (8-1, 1 KO).
These two faced each other in January where Odom was disqualified for continuing to hit Hernandez as he was down. Hernandez was furious, as some could agree, with a premature stoppage.
The first bout of the evening featured Adam Lopez (10-5, 5 KOs) who won by a quick KO in the second round against Pablo Cruz (11-1, 3 KOs). Cruz won the first round by landing hard shots to the body and being the more aggressive fighter.
The intensity during this fight was great as both men were looking for the knockout, Lopez just made it quicker to the draw.
