“I felt like, that’s what happens when you believe your own hype. I mean, he was – don’t get me wrong, Canelo is a great champion, but I felt like he just believed himself that he has this one-punch knockout power that he can stop everybody.”

David Benavidez recently joined Inside Boxing with Dan Canobbio to talk about why he is ready for a massive step up after this upcoming weekend’s fight with David Lemieux. Benavidez also spoke on Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo, the two names he wants the most.

David Benavidez on Canelo’s stunning loss to Dmitry Bivol [23:47]:

  • “I felt like, that’s what happens when you believe your own hype. I mean, he was – don’t get me wrong, Canelo is a great champion, but I felt like he just believed himself that he has this one-punch knockout power that he can stop everybody. And, don’t get me wrong, he’s been in there. He’s beat champions. But, the type of champions he beat – he beat, like, the weakest ones out of 68 (possible title champions). The guys that have no power. The guys that are known for having no power and they just box around.”
  • “He had some great wins against Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders, but those guys, you know, they didn’t really look too strong. They looked like they were just trying to survive till the 12th round. And, I always said that once you get a strong fighter that’s bigger than Canelo, that has as much power as Canelo and actually stands his ground, and doesn’t just try to make it to the 12th round, Canelo’s gonna have some issues. And, that’s what happened to him.”
  • “I did want to give Canelo his first loss (since 2013), but I feel like just as me taking everything in, I have my own game plan with Canelo that I would definitely use, but now Bivol showed us something. (There are) more holes in Canelo’s game plan and that can be used against him. But hats off to Bivol.”

David Benavidez on one day fighting Jermall Charlo [27:58]:

  • “That guy just talks and talks and talks. I feel like he just says a bunch of nonsense everytime he gets a camera put in front of him…This is how these guys are. They just talk and talk and talk and think everybody’s intimidated of them. But, at the end of the day, nobody’s really intimidated of them.”
  • “Honestly, I’d want to get (Jermall) Charlo first (before Canelo).”
  • “It’s a big fight, and like I said, it’s not only a big fight, but it sets up another big fight too. Like I’ve said, may the best man win. I’m confident in my skills; that’s why I’m calling out all these guys. So, I know I would beat Charlo. So, it’s just a bit of business moving. I’m just ready to give the fans what they want to see.”
  • “If I was such an easy target, and all these guys really believed that they could beat me, they would’ve beaten me already. They would’ve got in the ring and beat me already. But, it’s just a whole bunch of shit. They want to show people that they’re the biggest and baddest. It’s one thing to talk, but it’s another thing to prove it. I’d rather prove it instead of talk, so I’m not like these other guys.”
