Boxing fans woke up this morning to the news of Jeff Horn defeating Anthony Mundine in Brisbane, Australia.
Horn (19-1, 13 KO’s), returning from his loss to world champion Terence Crawford back in June, punished Mundine (48-9, 28KO’s) and scored a TKO victory within 96 seconds of the first round.
Plenty of hype was built up from this fight as Mundine, 13 years older than his opponent brought in racial and discriminating insults. After the TKO, Mundine kept it classy and congratulated his opponent before he announced this was the last fight of his long career.
Chris Algieri steps out from behind the kitchen counter of Daniel Jacobs, to enter the ring tonight against Angel Hernandez. The fight takes place in Huntington, New York at The Paramount Theatre. Algieri (21-3, 8KO’s) hasn’t stepped a foot in the ring since April 2016 when he faced Errol Spence Jr. The TKO in the fifth round was his third loss of four fights starting with Manny Pacquiao in 2015.
Algieri’s master’s degree in clinical nutrition helped him stay involved with boxing over the years, educating fighters with what they should put into their bodies. Now, stepping back into the ring, this is where Algieri says he is most comfortable.
“I’m looking forward to making a run. I truly believe if you don’t see yourself at the top of the division, you’re either in the wrong division or the wrong sport. I’m here to be a world champion.”
In a recent interview, Anthony Joshua sits back and talks about Saturday night’s much anticipated WBC Heavyweight championship between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury. When asked who he thinks will win Joshua confidently says, “Definitey Wilder.” After he bursts into laughter, Joshua explains that Fury’s long layoff after defeating Wladimir Klitschko will be his demise.
Joshua was also able to defeat Wladimir Klitschko in the 11th round after Klitschko returned from a two year layoff. “The proof is in the pudding, fighters who are inactive will always lose. History will repeat itself. So I think Fury will lose. Wilder will win, and after that there will be no reason why we shouldn’t fight.” It is unclear whether or not Joshua will be ringside on Saturday night to see the heavyweight showdown.
WBC World lightweight champion Jose Ramirez (23-0, 16 KO’s) will finish out 2018 enjoying the holidays with his family. His manager, Rick Mirigan took to Instagram late Thursday night to post, “we got something incredible that took a shit load of hard work. I would say it, but we are (insert hush emoji here) for a few days.
Stay tuned, you don’t want to miss this.” In the comments, followers mention Vasyl Lomachenko, Jorge Linares, and Mauricio Hooker but no responses from Team Ramirez. Usually when Mirigan has something exciting to post, he makes sure he delivers. Guess we’ll just have to wait….
