Canelo Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo are set to collide on March 8, 2014 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas.
Fight News reported the news of the bout–which was first reported by Mexican publication ESTO.
Round By Round Boxing also received confirmation from a source close to the fight who wished to remain nameless.
After losing out on a possible mega bout against Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto–who opted to seek a fight with Middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez–Canelo was left with few options for his return bout.
After dropping his first career bout at the hands of pound-for-pound king, Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14, 2013, Canelo will try to garner public interest against an opponent who isn’t well known outside of hardcore boxing circles.
The final two candidates to face Alvarez were Angulo and newly crowned IBF champion, Carlos Molina, who is possibly even less known to casual boxing fans.
Angulo will certainly provide a more exciting matchup from a fans perspective and gives Canelo an opponent who is not fleet of foot or hard to find–something the youngster may be looking for after facing Mayweather.
Expect an official announcement soon from Golden Boy regarding Canelo vs. Angulo as well as details regarding the undercard bouts.
