On Friday, April 14, 2017, Ivan Delgado (11-1-1, 4KOs) of South Central, LA faced Paramount’s Charles Huerta (19-5, 12KOs) in the main event of Golden boy Promotions’ LA Fight Night Club from the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California.
Huerta stopped the Golden Boy prospect Delgado via a third-round knockout in stunning fashion. The crowd in attendance was heavily pro-Delgado, evidenced by the deafening cheer as Delgado walked to the ring.
Delgado came out in the first round throwing power shots as Huerta tried to establish and work behind his jab. It was a highly competitive first round as both fighters had their moments. Delgado landed a left hook to the chin of Huerta in the last ten seconds of the round which allowed him the edge the round out.
Both fighters traded heavy leather in the second. Delgado was caught standing straight up by a right hook and did a little dance. Delgado closed the second round strong again as he seemed to be the heavy handed of the two fighters.
This perception was quickly erased by a Charles Huerta right hand thirty-six seconds into the third round.
Delgado was floored, struggled to his feet and the fight was allowed to continue.
But it was clear Delgado was in bad shape, Huerta teed off on dropped him again with a right hand. At this point the referred stopped the fight and Huerta earned the upset knockout victory.
“He was a tough fighter but I knew I had to stick to the jab,” said Huerta.
“As the fight went on I was seeing everything he was giving me and after the 2nd round when I went back to my corner, I told my dad, ‘I got him.’ Coming into this fight I knew my experience was key and that is what I was able to show.”
