On Friday, April 13, 2018, a scheduled eight-round Featherweight battle of young-and-undefeated fighters opened up the PBC on FS1 telecast as Brooklyn, New York’s Chris Colbert (8-0, 3 KOs) took on Austin Dulay (11-1, 8 KOs) of Nashville, Tennessee.
Although on paper the bout looked even, Colbert quickly established his dominance in the bout as his slick movement and quick punches dictated the action in Round 1.
By Round 2, the Brooklyn pugilist began pumping an even more effective jab to the body and head of Dulay.
Midway through the second round, the 22-year-old Dulay ate a solid three-punch combination. Shortly after eating the combo, a straight right from Colbert landed on the button and spun Dulay around.
Dulay, visibly bothered by Colbert’s precise combinations, simply shook his head, implying that the punch did not bother him.
As Dulay continued to try and close the distance in Rounds 3 and 4, Colbert teed off from both the southpaw and orthodox stance, popping Dulay with vicious combinations at will.
By Round 6, ringside commentators Ray Flores and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero stressed that Dulay had no other choice but to go for broke.
But instead of finding any sustained success, Dulay continued to eat two-and-three punch combinations. Even when Dulay had Colbert in the corner, the Tennessee native was too tentative to put his punches together after eating so many hard counterpunches throughout the fight.
Furthering his dominance, Colbert dropped Dulay towards the end of Round 6.
Before the bout, Colbert stressed that his speed would be the difference and he couldn’t have been more correct.
Dulay, who had a frustrated look on his face throughout the bout from continuously getting beat to the punch, didn’t show the referee that he wanted to continue the fight going into Round 8 and in turn the fight was stopped.
The official decision was a Round 7 TKO in favor of Colbert who put on a masterful performance from top to bottom.
Colbert, one of three fighters who was recently featured in the Netflix Original Documentary, Counterpunch, seems primed and ready for more camera time as he continues to climb the ranks in the Featherweight division.
