Cotto vs. Martinez: Worth the Hype?

Is Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez worth all the pay-per-view hype?

The next big pay-per-view fight coming up on June 7 is shameful and makes me sick to my stomach.

Miguel Cotto moving up to middleweight–yes, middleweight ladies and gentleman–is ludicrous at best. Cotto turned down big money to fight Canelo Alvarez for an attempt to be the first Puerto Rican to win titles in four weight classes.

But don’t believe the hype and hoopla surrounding this fight, Cotto is no middleweight.

It seems as though Lou DiBella is doing everything in his power to keep Sergio Martinez away from Gennady Golovkin, but HBO should grow a pair here and force the Martinez vs. Golovkin fight.

Golovkin is the true king of the Middleweight division, but he can’t be promoted as such until he destroys Martinez or reigning champion simply retires.

Martinez says he doesn’t duck anyone and DiBella told Fight Hype that the Golovkin fight can be made, but only if it financially makes sense.

That means that unless HBO dishes out mega millions, they won’t take the fight.

Maybe Cotto pulls off a major upset and beats Martinez. If that happens, many fights could be made for Cotto including ones against Canelo and a rematch with Mayweather.

The sky will be the limit if this upset should happen, but this pay-per-view fight is, for lack of a better word, a joke.

Cotto’s attempt at going for history is correct, because he is going to get a historic beat down in front of his loving fans on June 7.

Cotto will go down in history as one of the best Puerto Rican fighters to ever lace up a pair of gloves, but he will come very short of greatness this Saturday night.
