Devon Alexander ”The Great” (27-4, 14 KOs) returned to action tonight following just over two years of inactivity to face tough Nicaraguan Walter Castillo (26-5-1, 19 KOs).

It was five years ago that Alexander defeated the Argentine bull known as Marcos Maidana via unanimous decision. It was a rough encounter in which Alexander suffered a blood clot in his nose that required a significant surgery.

What followed was a struggle not only with recovery, but with addiction to prescribed pain killers.

In the opening round, Alexander appeared to be in excellent shape as he stalked his foe behind a ruler straight right jab, occasionally following it with a left hand.

In Round 2, Alexander continued to press and caught Castillo with a four-punch combination that dropped his opponent on his seat.

Appearing buzzed, Castillo rose and the bell sounded several seconds later preventing Alexander from capitalizing on the opportunity.

Each of the remaining rounds looked very much like the one before it as Alexander boxed intelligently and Castillo tried to land heavy shots, not exclusively of the legal sort.

At the end of 10 rounds there was no love lost between the two combatants. The judges were all in agreement and saw a clear unanimous-decision victory for the triumphant return of Devon Alexander ”The Great”.
