Fan-friendly fighter Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs), who hasn’t been seen in the ring since a crushing defeat at the hands of Viktor Postol, will make his return at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight card on May 6, 2017.
The fight will air live on HBO Pay-Per-View on the celebrated Cinco de Mayo weekend.
Golden Boy Promotions‘ president Eric Gomez confirmed the news to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com.
“Matthysse is definitely going to be on the undercard. He’s making his comeback. He’s had his break,” said Gomez.
At 34, Matthysse has been in a number of wars including his battle with John Molina in 2014 which took home BWAA Fight of the Year honors.
After being stopped by Postol in the 10th round back in October of 2015, Matthysse took an extended period of time off to let his eye heal.
“His eye needed to get better. He had the fracture, but he’s been cleared,” said Gomez. “He’s looking good, he’s feeling good and he’s been training. He’s anxious to fight again.”
As for a potential opponent, Gomez says that nothing has been finalized as of yet.
“We’re looking at opponents for Matthysse now,” said Gomez. “He’s had the break he needed and now he’s excited to come back. He wants to go after a world title at welterweight and fight some of the big names. It’s a strong division. He wants to win a world title and this is the start.”
