On April 9, 2016, Gilberto Ramirez (33-0, 24 KOs) scored a unanimous decision victory against veteran Arthur Abraham (44-4, 29 KOs) to win the WBO Super Middleweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 12-round fight was the co-main event of Pacquiao-Bradley 3, which was televised via HBO pay-per-view.

Ramirez, of Mazatlan, Mexico, did something different than boxing fans are used to seeing from him. Instead of coming forward to fight at close range, Ramirez spent the fight on the outside, using his jab, straight left hands, and body shots while circling to his right.

Abraham, of Berlin, Germany, came forward with his signature peak-a-boo stance. It looked as if his game plan was to feel Ramirez in the early rounds before applying pressure later in the fight.

The pressure, however, never came, and Ramirez boxed the entire fight by punching around Abraham’s guard and landing more left hands as the fight progressed.

In the later rounds, Abraham seemed to push forward with more aggression, but it was too little too late. Abraham did not have the skill or the youth to compete with Ramirez.

Ramirez is now the first Mexican fighter to win a world title in the Super Middleweight division.
