If Adrian Granados (18-6-2, 12 KOs) and Javier Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KOs) would’ve gone the distance, it would’ve only gotten uglier.
The matchup opened up Showtime’s championship telecast on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, which was headlined by Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo.
It was a scrappy, foul-filled fight which lasted less than four full rounds and ended with Fortuna falling through the ropes and supposedly injuring his head.
Granados, who did not believe that Fortuna actually hurt himself, applied tons of pressure from the outset, but as is usually the case with his fights it wasn’t always the cleanest or most effective offensive pressure.
Speaking with Showtime’s Jim Gray after the bout, Granados gave what he thought was the real reason for Fortuna faking an injury.
“I feel like he felt I was coming on,” said Granados. “First and foremost I just want to pray that he’s okay. I didn’t push him. I think he fell with his own. I think he was looking for an excuse on his way out.”
The Texas crowd was not offended with Granados’ assertation as they seemed to agree that Fortuna’s injury was fake while booing the replay.
