Heavyweight Contender Hughie Fury Explains Acne Battle

Heavyweight contender Hughie Fury (20-0, 10 KOs) recently opened up about his struggles with a rare form of acne that he believes has stalled his career.

Fury, who as an amateur represented England at the 2012 Youth World Championships and won a gold medal in the Super Heavyweight division, is also the first cousin of former undisputed Heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury.

The 6’6″ 22-year-old Fury is now convinced that he is over the bout with acne and is ready to continue his march towards Heavyweight stardom.

Fury is in talks to be the next opponenTyson Fury Media Session - Paul Thomas - Getty Images2t for WBO title holder Joseph Parker and according to Boxing Scene that fight could be announced next week.

The title shot marks a big step in the right direction now that he has finished treating the long-term skin condition called conglobate acne.

According to the dermatology experts at Mid-Atlantic Skin in Waldorf, MD, acne conglobata is a severe condition and is most common in males 18 to 30 years old.

This type of acne appears with deep abscesses, significant inflammation, and acne scars. The severe acne lesions grow in size and discharge pus before developing thick scars.

“I went to a skin specialist and he said: ‘I can’t believe you have been fighting in this condition’,” said Fury (via Boxing Scene).

“He told me the bad infected blood basically poisons the insides, affects your immune system and you are always fatigued,” said Fury.

For those questioning the seriousness of Fury’s acne, a serious issue with fatigue is obviously a recipe for disaster.

The type of acne I had, in the olden days they used to bring them in and put them in hospital beds. That’s how bad it was. I never had one good training camp, about three weeks before a fight I would have to stop doing anything to get my strength back.

The mental part of dealing with acne is something many people can relate to, so aside from being physically draining, Fury has had to overcome the confidence issue.

“It was horrific, it can really do your confidence in. You would try and put a shirt on and it would be covered in blood.”

One can only hope that this bout of acne is now in the past for Fury and that his confidence is in top shape.

As for Tyson, who was forced to relinquish his titles after battling depression, Hughie states that his dream is for his cousin to return and reign alongside him in the Heavyweight division.

“The dream is for both of us to rule the heavyweight division; that is what I’ve always wanted.”
