Jayson Velez (23-0-1, 16 KOs) scored a 10-round unanimous decision victory over Daniel Ramirez (11-3, 5 KOs) in Golden Boy Promotions‘ fourth edition of LA Fight Club at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California.

The Featherweight fight was televised on Fox Sports 1 in the U.S.

Velez, 27, is a native of Puerto Rico who had just recently taken on Evgeny Gradovich for the IBF Featherweight title. The fight ended via split draw, but Velez nearly knocked his opponent out tonight.

In Round 2, Velez landed a thunderous left hand that sent Ramirez down hard.

“After the first knockdown, I thought I had him, and I definitely hurt him several times after,” said Velez.

“But,” Velez continued, “he would not give up.”

Indeed, Ramirez, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was not dissuaded. He immediately got back up and began fighting back against Velez.

Ramirez would eventually be outboxed for the following eight rounds, but he nevertheless had his moments and landed shots that made the former title challenger back up a few times.

Still, Velez landed the more significant punches in each round.

Velez won with scores of 99-90, 98-91 and 98-91.

“I thought Daniel was a good fighter. He came prepared to fight,” said Velez.

“I am now ready for another championship opportunity,” concluded Velez.

In the co-main event, Carlos Morales (9-1-3, 3 KOs) defeated Emmanuel Gonzalez (14-2, 7 KOs) in an eight-round Super Featherweight fight via unanimous decision.

Gonzalez began slowly with jabs and right hands, but Morales was the aggressor early on and landed more shots in the opening rounds.

Gonzalez, a slick boxer from Brooklyn, New York, fought most of the fight with his hands down, much to the dismay of the cornemen who continually asked him to keep his hands up.

Gonzalez was able to slip and dodge many punches, but Morales was much more willing to engage in order to land right and left hands.

Morales, a 25-year-old native of Mexico, won with scores of 80-72, 78-74 and 77-75.

In the first televised bout, Christian Gonzalez (10-0, 9 KOs) remained undefeated as he scored a six-round unanimous decision win over Darryl Hayes (3-4, 1 KO).

The Lightweight prospect had previously knocked out all of his past opponents, but today he found a much tougher opponent in Hayes, who often clinched and found ways to avoid Gonzalez’ power.

Hayes was even deducted a points twice—one of holding in Round 1 and one for pushing Gonzalez down in Round 6. Gonzalez also suffered a cut due to a headbutt in Round 4.

Gonzalez, a native of Los Angeles, California, wasn’t doing much to help either, as he often came forward with a jab and sought for wild power shots.

This is often the result of knocking out lower opposition and suddenly being in with a tougher opponent.

Nevertheless, Gonzalez was dominant and won with scores of 60-52, 60-52 and 59-53.
