Joey Alday, the former No. 1 ranked amateur in the country is ready for the next stage in his boxing career.
The Odessa, Texas native has drawn the eyes of many different promotional avenues in the boxing world including Top Rank, Golden Boy Promotions, and Roc Nation Sports.
After coming up short during his Olympic trial run, Alday decided not to dwell on the losses and pursue a professional career in the sweet science.
Alday is now signed to Dallas’ Montoya-Rubial Boxing Management, ran by former fighter, trainer and now manager Michael Montoya and business partner Mike Rubial.
Montoya has high expectations for young Alday and firmly believes the sky is the limit for this young prospect.
“I think Joey is both a boxer and puncher. He can bang with the best and due to his amateur background all around the globe, he can box with the best of them,” said Montoya.
“He has all the tools to be to be the best. He’s charismatic, speaks English and Spanish so he has that crossover appeal. He’s also humble and hungry. Boxing is his life 24/7,” said Montoya.
Together, Alday and company will look to come to agreements with a promotional side and begin a pathway to what they hope will be a world championship one day. The 21 year old will leave behind a record of over 200 amateur wins with only 25 losses to start fresh in the professional world.
Before doing so, Alday was invited to take part in Shawn “Showtime” Porter’s exhibition this Saturday. This came to fruition when an unexpected injury hindered Porter’s opponent Keith “One Time” Thurman from taking part in their highly anticipated matchup.
In order to stay active, Porter decided to hold an exhibition bout broadcast live via Premier Boxing Champions‘ Facebook page. Alday will also be taking part in a four-round bout, taking on Brandon Lynch.
Lynch is a middleweight and the nephew of legendary comedian Eddie Murphy. The bout is scheduled for four rounds with headgear and 16 oz. gloves.
Alday is focused and excited for the opportunity. “I’m just excited to showcase my skills to everybody,” said Alday.
“I just plan on going in there and do what I do best.”
This opportunity shines more light on the up-and-coming prospect and will only raise his stock in boxing. When asked what his plans are following this Saturday, Alday simply replied, “I just want to officially turn pro and ideally have a professional fight in my hometown this year!”
