In a 10-round super welterweight fight, solid puncher John Jackson (19-2, 15 KOs) of the Virgin Islands confronted veteran from the Philippines Dennis Laurente (49-5, 30 KOs).
In the opening round southpaw Laurente, representing the Elorde boxing gym of the Filipino “Flash” Elorde boxing fame, pressed the action and tried to bull Jackson along the ropes while Jackson was more methodical and had better punch placement.
The excitement built in the third with an early knockdown of Laurente and they mixed it up along the ropes, the Filipino clearly not seriously hurt.
They exchanged well again in the round six and “Da Rock” Jackson landed the cleaner shots once more as Laurente doggedly pursued him.
From that point Jackson found his range more effectively and began landing uppercuts at a distance–which is usually discouraged because it is very dangerous–and ripped hooks to the body.
In the 10th and final round the durable Laurente continued to pursue Jackson and was caught cleanly with a number of single shots and combinations.
The judges unanimously scored the fight for Jackson with scores of 100-89, 100-89 and 100-89.
