John Vera Jr. (18-0, 11 KOs) pleased his hometown crowd by earning a 3rd round stoppage over Nigerian Sunday Ajuwa (13-3, 10 KOs).
Vera found a home for virtually every punch he decided to throw out during the fight. To the surprise of many cheering on the Texan, Ajuwa took the shots well at first.
“I’m not surprised. Guys like him are tough as nails and he took those shots well,” said Vera. “I could feel those punches all the way down to my arms! But we got the stoppage anyways.”
With only one second left in the third, the ref had seen enough and called a halt to the action, giving Vera his 18th win and 11th stoppage.
In regards to what’s next, the fighter from Ft. Worth has his mind made up and wants the Puerto Rican legend, Miguel Cotto.
“Only one I’m looking at right now is Cotto,” said Vera. “I hope that fight can happen but we’ll see. I’m ready.”
Vera has paid his dues and fought his way to contender level. This could possibly be the shot he’s been chasing his whole life.
