On Saturday, June 10, 2017, Daniel “Twitch” Franco (16-2-3, 11 KOs) and Jose “Pepito” Haro (14-1-1, 8 KOs) fought for the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) Featherweight title at the WinnaVegas Resort Casino in Sloan, Iowa.

Franco and Haro were the KO Night Boxing: War in WinnaVegas main event, which aired live on CBS Sports Network.

Early on, Haro came out aggressive and set the tone of the fight. Even though Franco had advantages in both height and reach, Haro controlled the pace of the fight by using his jab. Haro was effective in landing his jab both to the body and head of Franco continually throughout the fight.

The 30-year-old Haro, ranked No. 14 by the USBA going into Saturday night’s fight, extended his win streak to six in a row. Haro dropped Franco, who was ranked No. 5 by the USBA in the eighth round with a devastating overhand right. Though Franco beat the count and was able to stand up, he was floored again later in the eighth by another powerful right hand. Referee, Celestino Ruiz immediately halted the bout.

While Haro continues his career resurgence and put himself on the map in the Featherweight division with this upset, Franco’s destiny is uncertain.

Though Franco was coherent following the match, he was quickly removed on a stretcher before heading to the hospital. Franco was rushed into emergency surgery to stop two brain bleeds and later induced into a coma.

“At this point the doctors have told us the next 48 hours will be critical in regards to him making a complete recovery,” said manager Ray Chaparro (via Bleacher Report).

“We ask for prayers from the boxing community at this time.”

This is just yet another reminder that boxing is not a game. Everyone at Round By Round Boxing have Daniel Franco and his family in our thoughts and prayers.
