Last night on a special edition of ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights, “The Riverside Rocky” Josesito Lopez (32-6, 18 KOs) was more impressive than his last outing as he stopped Aaron Martinez (19-3-1, 4 KOs) in five rounds.
But that is hardly saying much. If he was in with anybody more than a club fighter, it could have been trouble.
Lopez still throws punches in bunches, but those punches lack the snap that they once possessed.
Even though he was hardly a banger, Lopez did have enough power to get your respect.
Maybe it was the beating he took from Canelo Alvarez or all the punches he absorbed against Marcos “Chino” Maidana, but it seems as though Josesito needs to move down to Jr. Welterweight in order to be more effective.
Last night saw him score a bizarre TKO, when Lopez landed a solid left hook and Martinez turned his back to him like he was quitting.
When the referee stopped the fight, Martinez complained.
But, the fight was called and Lopez moved towards another opportunity to gain a big payday.
