Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs (58-6-1, 51 KOs) stepped into the ring against Michael Marrone (21-415 Knockouts) in Saturday night’s heavyweight main attraction at The Hard Rock Hotel in Briggs hometown of Hollywood, Florida.
It was a star studded event and legends such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Larry Holmes were among the 21 heavyweight champions in attendance, which was enough to make any boxing fanatic salivate like James Toney at a Golden Corral buffet.
Briggs, who set a world record with 36 first round knockouts at heavyweight, did not disappoint his fans who filled the arena as his bout approached with sporadic chants of “Let’s Go Champ,” which clearly fueled his apparent fury.
After a fairly conservative first round, Briggs dropped Marrone for a seven count just before the bell that mercifully rescued the challenger.
There was no saving Marrone in the second as Briggs appeared to toy with his nemesis before dropping him heavily and notching another knockout victory.
At the conclusion of the bout Briggs grabbed the mic and once again called out Wladimir Klitischko who was ringside with his brother Vitali.
